Disney’s AI Strategy Includes ChatGPT Deployment for Employees

by admin477351

Disney’s comprehensive AI strategy includes deploying ChatGPT for employees alongside a $1 billion OpenAI investment and character licensing deal for Sora. The agreement grants the AI video platform access to over 200 characters from Disney, Marvel, Pixar, and Star Wars franchises.

The three-year partnership announced Thursday allows Sora users to create short social videos featuring Disney characters through text-based prompts. These AI-generated videos can be viewed and shared across platforms, enabling new forms of fan engagement. The agreement specifically prohibits the use of talent likenesses or voices.

Disney’s engagement with OpenAI encompasses both consumer-facing and internal applications. The company will utilize OpenAI’s tools for new product development and customer experiences, while implementing ChatGPT across its workforce for productivity enhancement. This dual approach reflects Disney’s view of AI as transformative to both operations and content.

Bob Iger, Disney’s chief executive officer, described the collaboration as marking a significant moment for the entertainment sector. He emphasized that Disney would approach generative AI thoughtfully and responsibly, ensuring the technology extends the company’s storytelling capabilities while protecting creators and their work. This framing addresses concerns from entertainment professionals.

The entertainment industry has largely avoided AI companies, worried about data protection and labor relations. OpenAI has engaged with several major studios about Sora’s creative and commercial applications, but Disney’s commitment represents a breakthrough. The updated Sora platform, launched in September with invitation-only access, enables users to generate videos from text prompts, view community content, and create AI avatars that can appear in videos with appropriate permissions.
