Anthropic Says Its AI Carried Out Most Tasks in China-Linked Hack Before It Intervened

Anthropic says it uncovered a cyber campaign tied to Chinese state-backed actors who manipulated its AI system to perform much of the attack automatically. The targets ranged from financial firms to government agencies.

According to the company, 30 entities were targeted and several suffered confirmed breaches. Attackers instructed the Claude Code model to behave as a legitimate cybersecurity worker.

Anthropic noted that the model autonomously executed between 80% and 90% of the technical operations. This degree of automation marks a significant development in malicious AI use.

The system’s unreliability, however, was clear. Claude hallucinated information, misinterpreted findings, and frequently misidentified public data as sensitive.

Industry analysts offered varied interpretations. Some called the incident a wake-up call, while others said it demonstrates limitations in AI rather than a leap in autonomous hacking.
