Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum announced on Friday that Mexico and the United States are advancing in discussions aimed at crafting a new trade agreement. This development follows a recent phone conversation between Sheinbaum and U.S. President Donald Trump, which she described as productive.
The discussion, held on Wednesday, centered on trade negotiations without reaching a final agreement, according to Sheinbaum. The ongoing talks are significant as they precede further negotiations on the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA), focusing on contentious issues such as tariffs on Mexican automobiles, steel, and aluminum.
Sheinbaum highlighted the frequency of her communications with Trump, noting that she has engaged in 22 conversations with the U.S. President since January 2025. She emphasized that these discussions are generally disclosed to the public once concrete agreements are formed.
During this latest interaction, the conversation was strictly limited to trade matters, leaving out other pressing bilateral issues like security and drug trafficking, which remain separate topics of discussion between the two nations.
With both countries committed to resolving outstanding trade issues, the dialogue continues as Mexico and the United States work toward a mutually beneficial agreement.
