The United States, Denmark, and Greenland have reached a historic agreement to bolster security cooperation in the Arctic and North Atlantic regions. The trilateral pact, signed by U.S. President Donald Trump, Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen, and Greenland Prime Minister Jens-Frederik Nielsen during the United Nations General Assembly in New York, will allow the U.S. to expand its military presence on Greenland, a strategically important island.
The agreement, which amends the 1951 U.S.-Denmark defense agreement, permits the establishment of new defense zones at Narsarsuaq and Mestersvig. It also authorizes the development of a “Golden Dome” missile defense system in Greenland. While the deal provides broader access for U.S. military aircraft and vessels across Greenland and its territorial waters, it explicitly maintains the sovereignty and territorial integrity of the Kingdom of Denmark and Greenland’s right to self-determination.
Importantly, the agreement requires approval through the respective parliamentary procedures in Denmark and Greenland before it can be enacted. It also restricts non-NATO countries from establishing military installations on the island and imposes limitations on foreign investments in critical infrastructure and resource extraction sectors.
This development follows previous tensions sparked by President Trump’s interest in acquiring Greenland, citing its strategic position and significant mineral and energy resources. Greenland is a self-governing territory within the Kingdom of Denmark and is located between North America and Europe, enhancing its strategic importance.
The U.S. already operates the Pituffik Space Base in northwestern Greenland. With this new agreement, the American military presence on the island could see its most significant expansion since the Cold War, reflecting the growing geopolitical interest in the Arctic region.
