Mexico Faces Fuel Supply Concerns Amid Potential U.S. Diesel Export Restrictions

by admin477351

Mexico is grappling with potential fuel supply challenges as U.S. President Donald Trump supports a proposal to limit diesel exports, a measure aimed at addressing the soaring fuel prices in the United States. This development could significantly affect Mexico, which relies heavily on diesel imports from the U.S. In June 2026, Mexico imported approximately 288,000 barrels of diesel per day from the U.S., representing over 40% of its diesel demand.

The Mexican government has indicated that its domestic refining network can help ensure fuel availability. Additionally, it is maintaining fuel subsidies and implementing price-support initiatives while exploring options to enhance domestic production and storage capabilities. As the U.S. administration evaluates the feasibility of a full or partial diesel export restriction, potential impacts on other fuel types and price increases are a concern, as noted by U.S. Energy Secretary Chris Wright.

Should U.S. diesel supplies dwindle, Mexico may face heightened transportation and logistics costs. As a result, the country could be compelled to diversify its import sources and bolster its domestic refining capacity to lessen its dependence on U.S. fuel supplies. Such strategic adjustments are crucial for Mexico to address potential disruptions stemming from changes in U.S. diesel export policies.
