Mexican Foreign Minister Roberto Velasco, in his first address to the United Nations General Assembly, emphasized Mexico’s dedication to national sovereignty and cooperation with international partners. Velasco, representing Mexico in the absence of President Claudia Sheinbaum, highlighted the country’s ability to engage globally while maintaining its autonomy, advocating for international collaboration without subordinating its national interests.
During his speech, Velasco underscored Mexico’s domestic achievements, particularly in social policies and poverty reduction, and noted a reported decline in homicide rates. He linked these efforts to Mexico’s broader stance that sustainable peace hinges on social development and respect for national sovereignty. Addressing global issues, Velasco reiterated Mexico’s support for a two-state solution in the Middle East and recognized Palestine’s right to exist securely. Additionally, he criticized the US embargo on Cuba, affirming Mexico’s commitment to providing humanitarian aid.
Velasco’s participation at the General Assembly also included meetings with foreign officials from countries such as Spain, France, Qatar, Norway, the Netherlands, the United Kingdom, and Peru, aimed at strengthening international partnerships. Discussions with Spanish Foreign Minister José Manuel Albares centered on bilateral relations and preparations for the upcoming Ibero-American Summit in Madrid. Meanwhile, talks with Peru focused on the reopening of embassies following the restoration of diplomatic ties, with both nations agreeing to pursue dialogue and mutual respect.
In other engagements, Velasco addressed topics like economic cooperation, strategic investment, UN reform, trade relations, and international efforts to bolster multilateral institutions. Through these diplomatic interactions, Mexico seeks to enhance its global presence while adhering to its principles of non-intervention and sovereignty.
