Cuba Threatens Retaliation if U.S. Pursues Military Action Over Drones

by admin477351

In a stern warning, Cuba’s President Miguel Díaz-Canel stated that any military intervention by the United States would lead to a “bloodbath” with unpredictable repercussions for regional peace and stability. He emphasized that Cuba poses no threat, conveying his message through a post on X.

Díaz-Canel’s remarks come in response to a report claiming that Cuba had obtained over 300 military drones and allegedly discussed plans to target the US naval base at Guantánamo Bay, US military vessels, and Key West, Florida. This report has heightened tensions between the two nations, which have been adversaries for decades.

Cuban Foreign Minister Bruno Rodriguez added that Cuba, much like every nation, is entitled to legitimate self-defense against external threats under the UN charter and international law. He criticized those who fabricate pretexts to justify aggression against Cuba.

Compounding the tension, the US has intensified pressure on Cuba since severing its energy supplies after the arrest of Venezuela’s president, a Cuban ally, in January. This has resulted in severe fuel shortages and limited electricity access on the island. Further escalating the situation, US prosecutors intend to indict former Cuban leader Raúl Castro for the 1996 downing of two planes operated by the humanitarian group Brothers to the Rescue, a move seen as a significant step by the Trump administration to push for governmental change in Cuba.
