In the aftermath of the catastrophic twin earthquakes in Venezuela, the death toll has surged past 1,400 as rescue operations intensify to find survivors amidst the debris. The powerful quakes, which registered magnitudes of 7.2 and 7.5, struck the northern regions of the country on Wednesday evening, leading to widespread devastation in areas such as La Guaira and Caracas. According to Venezuelan authorities, at least 1,430 people have lost their lives, with approximately 3,200 suffering injuries and over 3,100 left without homes.
Despite these grim figures, rescue efforts continue, with nearly 68,900 individuals still reported missing by their families. In some of the hardest-hit regions, rescuers and residents are digging through the rubble using heavy machinery, shovels, and even their bare hands in a race against time. A glimmer of hope emerged with the rescue of an 11-year-old boy from a collapsed structure in Caraballeda, highlighting the ongoing struggle to find more survivors.
The economic impact of the earthquakes is also being assessed, with the United Nations estimating the damage at approximately $6.7 billion—equivalent to nearly 6% of Venezuela’s GDP. This estimate includes the destruction of homes and infrastructure, although broader economic losses have yet to be fully calculated. International aid has started to flow into the country, with rescue teams and emergency support coming from nations such as the United States, Mexico, Brazil, France, the Netherlands, Türkiye, and the United Kingdom. The United States has pledged to assist with coordinating flights, medical aid, and search-and-rescue operations.
To support relief efforts and maintain order, over 14,000 military and police personnel have been deployed to the affected regions. However, officials caution that access remains limited in certain areas due to extensive damage and safety hazards. As the international community rallies to support Venezuela during this crisis, humanitarian organizations, including the United Nations and the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies, are calling for sustained global assistance in what is one of the country’s most severe humanitarian emergencies in recent history.
