U.S. President Donald Trump has called on Mexico to increase its efforts in combating drug trafficking, emphasizing that the current measures taken by Mexican authorities are insufficient to curb the flow of illegal drugs into the United States.
In a determination sent to Congress, Trump acknowledged the actions of Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum’s administration, which has made strides by increasing drug seizures and dismantling clandestine laboratories. However, Trump insisted that more robust actions are necessary against drug-trafficking organizations and their financial networks.
The U.S. president highlighted the need for Mexico to target officials allegedly aiding these criminal groups, urging the identification, arrest, and prosecution of such individuals. Enhancing enforcement measures is crucial, according to Trump, to effectively address drug cartels operating within vast areas of Mexican territory.
Mexico is listed alongside Canada and several other nations identified by the U.S. as major drug-transit or illicit drug-producing countries. The determination also includes Central American and Caribbean nations like Guatemala, Honduras, El Salvador, Haiti, the Dominican Republic, Jamaica, and Belize, which are considered part of international drug-trafficking routes.
