Germany has accused Russia of orchestrating a drone attack at Leipzig/Halle Airport, labeling it as part of a larger strategy of hybrid warfare meant to destabilize the nation and inflict serious harm. Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt and Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul revealed that investigators found evidence suggesting the Russian state’s involvement in supplying the necessary equipment and expertise for the attack, allegedly carried out by lower-level operatives recruited for the task.
The incident, which occurred on August 4, involved a drone carrying explosives found within the airport’s security perimeter, near a Ukrainian Antonov cargo plane used for transporting weapons to Ukraine. Although the explosive device did not detonate, German authorities stated that its potential to cause significant destruction was considerable. Subsequent investigations uncovered traces of the military-grade explosive hexogen and another drone near the airport, initially leading authorities to suspect the involvement of a second drone, a claim now under review.
In response to the attack, Germany announced a series of retaliatory measures against Russia. These include additional sanctions, stricter entry controls for Russian nationals, and new restrictions targeting individuals connected to Russian activities. Moreover, actions are being taken against Russia’s so-called shadow fleet, used for transporting Russian oil and other goods. Germany is also backing a new European Union sanctions package aimed at further Russian-linked companies and organizations.
Foreign Minister Wadephul clarified that, while Germany is not at war with Russia, it has increasingly become a target of hybrid warfare tactics such as sabotage, disinformation, and destabilization. In a show of solidarity, Germany’s European and NATO allies have condemned the attack, emphasizing the necessity of a united response to the escalating hybrid threats from Russia. NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte confirmed that Germany had provided evidence implicating Moscow, while European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen reassured continued support for Germany.
The drone incident at Leipzig has further strained already tense relations between Germany and Russia, which have deteriorated significantly since Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine. German officials and security experts warn that this event might be part of a broader pattern of Russian-linked activities across Europe, including acts of sabotage and other security threats. Several European nations are currently investigating potential connections between these incidents.
