Representatives from Iran and Cuba staged walkouts during U.S. President Donald Trump’s address at the United Nations General Assembly on Tuesday, following his sharp criticisms of both nations. The Iranian delegation exited the chamber as Trump discussed U.S. military actions against Iran and warned of potential further measures if no agreement was reached. While Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian and Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi were in New York for the assembly, they were not present during the speech.
In his address, Trump presented the United States as facing a pivotal decision between negotiating a deal with Iran or escalating actions against the Islamic Republic. He also urged other countries to apply increased economic pressure on Tehran.
The Cuban delegation followed suit, leaving the chamber after Trump labeled Cuba a “failed state” and stated that his administration was pushing for significant changes on the island. He asserted that freedom would eventually come to Cuba and emphasized that the U.S. would prevent foreign adversaries from establishing a base there.
The walkouts underscored the tension as Trump laid out his administration’s positions on international issues before the global leaders gathered at the UN General Assembly.
